About the authors

Anne-Laure Fayard is Assistant Professor of Management of Polytechnic University in New York. Prior to moving to New York, she was a faculty member at INSEAD, both in Singapore and in Fontainebleau. She has been a visiting scholar with the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group and Design London at Imperial College in London 2009-2010 and with the Center for Sociology of Innovation at Ecole des Mines in Paris in 2005.

Her research interests involve organizational communication, socio-material practices, space and interdisciplinary collaboration. She investigates the dynamic relationship between information technologies and organizations, with particular focus on cultures, work practices, and change.

Her work has been published in several leading journals such as Organization Studies, the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Information System Journal and Harvard Business Review. She has been quoted in periodical such asthe New York Times and the Financial Times.

She holds an M.A and M. Phil. in Philosophy from Paris – La Sorbonne, an M. Phil. in Cognitive Science from Ecole Polytechnique (Paris) and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from the Ecole des Hautes-Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris).

Anca Metiu is Professor of Management at ESSEC Business School in France. She earned a B.A. in Law and Economics from the University of Sibiu, an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a PhD in Management from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining ESSEC, she taught at INSEAD.

Her research focuses on collaboration dynamics in distributed work. She has examined the status dynamics of distributed work groups, the work organization of developers in the free and open-source software development community, and the creation of group engagement in teams. Some of her current projects include the emergence of perceived proximity between people who work across geographic distance, and the processes of professional identity formation for women in the free/open-source software communities.

She has published articles in a variety of prestigious outlets, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Organization Science, Organization Studies, and Oxford Review of Economic Policy. She is currently serving on the editorial board of influential journals in the management field, including Organization Science and Organization Studies.

She teaches at the executive, master's, and PhD levels.
